What is Wellbeing?
A shared exploration for Coaches who help others thrive while struggling to do the same for themselves.
The GCC exists to promote quality and ethical coaching practices, build meaningful connections with peers, and provide inclusive support for coaches across the world. We offer resources, activities, conversations, and collaboration needed for coaches to thrive.
Giving takes its toll
Exhausted after a day of client sessions? Finding yourself giving brilliant wellbeing advice you struggle to follow? You're not alone.
As coaches, we excel at holding space for others' growth while often neglecting our own. This paradox—being wellbeing experts who struggle with personal wellbeing—is exactly what we're addressing in our new Global Coaches Coalition, Health and Wellbeing group.
Picture this: It's Thursday afternoon. You've just finished your fifth coaching session of the day. Your client left energized and inspired. You, however, feel drained, with three unanswered emails, dinner to prepare, and that nagging feeling you're not practicing what you preach about work-life balance.
Sound familiar? Well, if it does, it’s because coaches need coaching too, especially around their self-care and nurturing practices.
What Is Wellbeing, Truly?
In a world of speed, complexity, and uncertainty, wellbeing is no longer a luxury—it's a necessity.
In its simplest interpretation, wellbeing is the art of being well, a sense of ease with oneself across all aspects of life. It's the feeling that your needs are met in such a way that you have energy, vitality and the capacity to care for yourself and others.
Wellbeing isn't a destination. It's a continuum. Just as nature is always shifting, so are we. Our bodies change, our circumstances evolve, and our internal world moves with them. Wellbeing becomes a reflection of how we adapt, function, and flourish in the middle of all of that change.
Rather than something we passively wait to feel, wellbeing can be seen as a pattern of behaviour, a process we engage in, day by day. This view shifts the narrative: wellbeing isn't something we hope for, it's something we practise.
A Multidimensional, Dynamic Experience
The Health and Wellbeing Coaches' Handbook describes wellbeing as a multidimensional, dynamic, and person-centred experience that includes:
Psychological wellbeing – purpose, personal growth, and mastery
Social wellbeing – connection, contribution, and belonging
Subjective wellbeing – life satisfaction and emotional balance
Existential wellbeing – the sense that life has meaning and coherence
At its core, wellbeing is a reflection of how we are in relation to our expectations of ourselves and the world. This is why your sense of wellbeing will never look exactly like anyone else's – And why cookie-cutter solutions often fall short.
Wellbeing as Behavior You Can Practice
When we see wellbeing as something behavioral, we can observe it, adapt it, and grow it. It becomes measurable. These behaviors are flexible and shift with us, adapting to our life stages, stressors, and personal needs.
Think of:
Practicing gratitude daily, which reinforces emotional uplift
Moving your body in ways that energize you
Offering kindness and experiencing connection in return
All of these are reinforcing behaviors that make it easier to repeat them, and over time, they become habits that sustain a deeper sense of meaning and vitality.
You're Already Doing So Much
Here's the thing: as a coach, you're likely already doing work that is meaningful. You're in service to others. You're resilient and grounded. So maybe the question isn't whether you have what it takes, but how to support yourself better when you feel stretched too thin.
How do you shift from feeling responsible for everyone else's transformation, second-guessing yourself, or hovering near burnout?
That's Where the GCC Health and Wellbeing Group Comes In
Health and Wellbeing for Coaches is a new community group launching on 23 June on the Global Coaching Coalition platform at www.coachcoalition.org . This group is designed to support you, the coach, in staying well while helping others do the same.
In our monthly sessions, we'll explore practical wellbeing strategies specifically designed for coaches, blending cutting-edge science with real-world application. You'll discover how wellbeing isn't just a concept to teach clients—it's a dynamic practice that can transform your coaching business and personal life simultaneously.
Join us to:
Develop a personalized wellbeing practice that energizes rather than depletes you between sessions
Connect with fellow coaches who understand the unique challenges of holding space for others
Learn boundary-setting techniques that prevent the all-too-common coach burnout cycle
Transform wellbeing concepts from "things you teach" to "ways you thrive"
Build sustainable coaching practices that allow you to serve powerfully without sacrificing yourself
Wellbeing is a verb—an ongoing way of being, shaped by daily choices, not distant goals. Join us to grow yours.
