Almost everyone who becomes a coach shares a deeply personal reason for doing so. For most, coaching feels like a calling — Something they’ve been doing naturally their whole lives, often long before they even realized it was a profession. This passion is what makes the coaching world so extraordinary. It’s filled with people who want to help others live their best lives while fulfilling their own purpose.
But here’s the thing: Passion doesn’t eliminate blind spots or protect us from losing sight of the bigger picture.
And lose sight we have. Many of us have become hyper-focused on business development at the expense of keeping an eye on the global positioning of coaching.
It’s easy to do, just take a look at the coaching industry today. Everywhere you turn, you’re bombarded with business building programs and options.
While these are valuable concepts for entrepreneurial coaches seeking sustainable success, they often dominate the conversation. The relentless focus on business development has created a marketing sales-pitch tsunami that’s hard to escape.
As a result, many coaches find themselves consumed not only by the day-to-day realities of running a business, but all the while “take this program!!” is being screamed across every platform around them. It is simply a LOT to manage.
These are important priorities, no doubt about it. But in the push to focus on business survival and “success,” one critical question gets pushed aside:
How do we grow the number of coaching prospects world-wide?
This isn’t a question for someone else to answer—this is a question that every coach has the power to answer and help make those answers a reality.
And that influence can start with something surprisingly simple yet profoundly impactful.
The Opportunity We’re Missing Is: Teaching Coachability
For decades, the coaching profession has focused on selling the features and benefits of coaching: transformational results, goal achievement, and overcoming challenges, etc. But here’s the truth: None of that matters if the client isn’t coachable.
Think about it. The best tools, techniques, and frameworks in the world are meaningless if the client isn’t willing to explore, learn, and grow. Yet, as a profession, we rarely talk about the importance of being coachable in a broad, proactive way.
We focus on coachability in the context of evaluating clients who are already seeking coaching. We assess whether they’re ready for coaching—whether they are coachable— immediately before entering a coaching relationship with them.
But what if that’s too late in the process for us start thinking about, or talking about coachability? And, what if doing it this way means that we’re leaving the seeds of coachability for someone else to plant?! I believe it’s exactly what’s happening. So, let’s talk about another way we can do this that serves us all better!
Imagine this:
What if we, as coaches, became purposeful advocates for the power of being a coachable human? Imagine is every coach had at least one event a year about why being a coachable person was a noble and valuable goal to strive for? What if we made it our mission to spread the idea that choosing to be coachable can transform your life?
Imagine coaches talking about, teaching, and demonstrating how being coachable can improve careers, relationships, finances, and health.
Imagine people becoming curious about coachability and striving to embrace it as a core mindset.
Imagine a world where being coachable is readily recognized as a critical skill for personal and professional growth.
Imagine a world where being coachable is a sign of emotional maturity, and relationship readiness.
When more people desire to be coachable, they naturally become more open to coaching. They’ll approach us more eager to grow, ready to learn, and be more willing to partner in a meaningful coaching relationship.
Why Coaches Should Champion Coachability
Coaches need to be the loudest voices championing the power of being coachable. It’s time to shout it from the rooftops!
When we encourage people to embrace coachability, we:
Create more coachable individuals who are open to growth.
Build stronger coaching relationships rooted a shared value of coachability.
Foster a culture of feedback and continuous improvement that benefits individuals, teams, and communities.
Drive the growth of coaching/coachability awareness propelling coaching further and further into the mainstream.
This is the opportunity we’ve been missing. By failing to concurrently champion coachability, side-by-side with coaching itself, we’re overlooking a key driver of success—and a powerful way to expand the conversation around coaching by expanding the awareness of being coachable.
And this important shift can nestle in right alongside the work you’re already doing in, and on, your business. It’s a gentle add-on that is part of, and bigger than, growing your business — it’s about making coaching more accessible, impactful, and transformative for everyone. And we can do it, together!
